Most people skin the tomatoes first and cook at a really low temperature (200°) for many, many hours. This is for patient people - not for me.<br /><br />I got a recipe from my friend & co-worker Barb and found it was perfect for me with a couple slight modifications. To start, I LEFT THE SKINS ON. After making BBQ sauce a couple weeks ago, I will never remove tomato skins again.<br /><br /><left><a href="http://blogpress.w18.net/photos/09/09/21/527.jpg"><img src="http://blogpress.w18.net/photos/09/09/21/s_527.jpg" border="0" width="210" height="281" style="margin:5px" /></a><br /><br /></left><div><div><left>As you can see by the picture, I cut the larger tomatoes into chunks, cut smaller ones in half and left the cherry tomatoes whole.<br /><br />I drizzled olive oil over the tomatoes and made sure the surface of the pan was covered as well. Then sprinkled with a little course ground sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Since I left the skins on, I made sure the skin side was down when possible. Then placed the pan in the cold oven.<br /><br />Next, I turned the oven to 450° and waited until the oven was preheated. This caused a real stink in my house - literally. It got pretty smokey, so if you're like me and don't clean your oven, you've been warned.<br /><br />Once your oven is preheated, turn it down to 325° for about an hour and a half. Since I like mine a little softer, I turned it down to 200° for another hour and a half (three hours total). If you like them crispy, keep it at 325° for a full two-three hours. During the last hour, I checked the tomatoes often and pulled the smaller pieces off as they were crispy and dark.<br /><br />You can tell when they're done based on if they're crispy, dark and taste wonderful. When mine were done, I put them on a cooling rack for about an hour and then put whatever I didn't eat in the freezer.<br /><br />I love how the dried tomatoes tasted sweet, zippy and then spicy. I wasn't expecting that. Even though I put mine in the freezer, some folks put theirs in olive oil and store in the fridge (they do spoil faster this way).<br /><br />Thanks Barb for the great recipe!<br /><br />-- Posted from the road<br /></left></div></div>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-32830574971332706062009-09-16T19:44:00.000-07:002009-09-17T20:22:12.345-07:00Northern California Garden TourThis past weekend Travis and I took a little road trip to Northern California to meet some great folks I met on Twitter. This may sound strange to some of you, but it seemed perfectly normal to me. After all, I met Travis online just over three years ago.<div><br /></div><div>Our total trip was from Wednesday night to Monday night; driving time was a little over 11 hours each way. We arrived at Carri's home in Sacramento <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Thursday</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> </span>night -- just in time for the first tweet-up with Katie and Kristi. Even though each piece is different, they still go together perfectly in the backyard paradise she's worked hard to create. I hope you're as inspired as I am. <div><br /></div><div><div>When talking to Leslie about this post, she wanted me to mentioned the fence art she recently saw at a friends house. She has a friend with multiple plate racks hanging on her fence that she's filled with plates collected from thrift stores and garage sales (these are of roosters & chickens). According to Leslie, this looked pretty amazing.</div><div><div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Just remember, art is in the eye of the beholder. </span></div><div><br /></div><div>So, get to it! Start collecting pieces you love and I bet you'll be surprised how fantastic they look in your garden and even on your fence. And if the art you pick looks bad together - at least you love it. </div><div><br /></div><div>Below is a sample of Leslie's collection; her favorites are the masks. We asked everyone show up around 7 p.m. to pick a spot and visit. Then started the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">first movie</span>, <i>WALL-E</i>, around 8:30.<div><br /></div><div>After the kiddies went home, we watched <i>Haunting in Connecticut</i> for our <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">second movie.</span> We figured a scary movie was fitting for backyard movie entertainment.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then for the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">third movie</span>, <i>Adventureland</i>, we went inside since our friends Aaron and Kala were the only ones left and it was starting to get chilly. That and we didn't want to keep our neighbors up too late (we did let them know & invited them). </div><div><br /></div><div> <div>I tried to get a picture of everyone during the first movie but, unfortunately, it turned out a little blurry. I've never been known to be a great photographer. </div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, to add to the overall outdoor movie experience we ended up renting a popcorn machine. We <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><b>LOVED the popcorn machine.</b></span> It not only added to the experience but freed up time we would've spent manually making popcorn for our guests all night. We may even look into buying one for future parties - it'll be well worth the investment.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SpsJDu_vcgI/AAAAAAAAAww/90XiaJjG_FY/s1600-h/8-30-09_popcorn+machine.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SpsJDu_vcgI/AAAAAAAAAww/90XiaJjG_FY/s320/8-30-09_popcorn+machine.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375900539956457986" /></a>To fancy it up a bit, we also provided some fun popcorn toppings: </div><div><ul><li>Truffle Salt</li><li>Parmesan Cheese</li><li>Melted Cougar Gold Cheese</li><li>Tabasco</li><li>Johnny's Seasoning Salt</li><li>Fresh Ground Sea Salt </li><li>Peanut M&Ms</li><li>Gummy Bears</li></ul><div>But, since the popcorn machine is magic, it really didn't need any toppings at all. Every batch of popcorn tasted perfect. </div><div><br /></div><div>This is a bit of a surprise since we didn't purchase the pre-measure kits that came with the machine and ended up guessing: <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">1 cup of popping corn</span></b>, <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">1/4 cup of grape seed oil</span></b> (then olive oil later when we ran out) and <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">1 tablespoon salt</span></b>. I'm sure these aren't the official measurements but they worked great last night! </div><div><br /></div><div>Plus, we just used the random oil we had in the house and I'm pretty sure this is NOT what you're supposed to do. I read online that coconut oil is best. </div><div><br /></div><div>All in all it was a great time. I highly recommend throwing an outdoor movie night - even if you can't get your hands on a popcorn machine. It's even a treat for the chickens since they're waddling around the yard right now eating up fallen popcorn. </div></div><div></div></div>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-42495813655903257412009-08-26T20:09:00.000-07:002009-08-26T21:04:01.672-07:00Dahlia Eye Candy<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SpX6J0URS4I/AAAAAAAAAwY/JKiKqCTE2ZI/s1600-h/082609_Random+Flower+Chicken+Pics+081.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SpX6J0URS4I/AAAAAAAAAwY/JKiKqCTE2ZI/s400/082609_Random+Flower+Chicken+Pics+081.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374476776905984898" /></a>This past Sunday we drove to Everett to check out the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><b>2009 American Dahlia Society National Show</b></span>; this year's show was hosted by the Snohomish County Dahlia Society. <div><br /></div><div>As you may already know, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-large;"><b>I love Dahlias</b></span>. <b> </b></div><div><br /></div><div>That being said, I was a little surprised how fast we walked through the hundreds of flowers on display. I didn't know such a thing existed!<br /><br />I picked up five rolls and started covering the fence the VERY SAME DAY.<br /><br />The front yard after picture is on the right. I don't have any before pictures because I hated the fence so much I never took pictures of the flower beds.<br /><br />The back yard 'in progress' picture is on the lower left - you can see the weeds growing from the neighbor's side of the fence. The after picture is on the right. As you can see, I still need to do some trimming but it already looks 100 percent better.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SoDoKUFjX6I/AAAAAAAAAqA/9Q0Yxx_ZsOc/s1600-h/081009_Garden+004.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368546019713965986" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SoDoKUFjX6I/AAAAAAAAAqA/9Q0Yxx_ZsOc/s320/081009_Garden+004.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJrFJJkagJ1p4Q-1Ft_OQaqqZj1zXcl2f4ndUrG4f7NPl4JjSsYFzq0b7gTKZbdd58ICPR3od8hnJFNR7wMYdkPeUfTJFQvUT6ANAuH0toa7bK-B4aqWEx5JZPSu075D1xfCPUNSMUQDs/s1600-h/080809_Garden+019.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368546026296256082" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJrFJJkagJ1p4Q-1Ft_OQaqqZj1zXcl2f4ndUrG4f7NPl4JjSsYFzq0b7gTKZbdd58ICPR3od8hnJFNR7wMYdkPeUfTJFQvUT6ANAuH0toa7bK-B4aqWEx5JZPSu075D1xfCPUNSMUQDs/s320/080809_Garden+019.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Anyone can do this little project in a couple hours. I figure by sharing some of the mistakes I’ve been making, others can hold me accountable and maybe learn a little in the process. </p><p>Here’s a list of my more common gardening mistakes, followed by the plan I’ll follow to become a better gardener.<br /></p><ul><li><strong>If I love a plant, I buy it.</strong> This is only a problem when I don’t have anywhere to plant my new treasure and end up putting it in the first open spot that’s big enough. In most cases I end up moving the plant at a later date.<br /><br /></li><li><strong>I don’t plan before I plant.</strong> I do this mostly because I need to get it in the ground quick before it dries out. As a result, I get clashing bloom colors, taller plants in front of smaller plants or plants getting too large for the space. Again, I end up moving the plant at a later date.<br /><br /></li><li><strong>Instead buying three or more of the same plant, I buy one.</strong> I’ve noticed lately that I have a lot of single plants scattered throughout the garden instead of plant groupings. This makes for a messy look in the garden. I really love the way plant groupings look -- clean and uniform.<br /><br /></li><li><strong>I get plants from other gardeners or plant sales.</strong> In other words, I have a lot of random nameless free plants. This is okay until it’s time to get more of the same plant or someone asks me the plant name.<br /></li></ul><p><strong>Being a Better Gardener Will Take Patience & Organization<br /></strong><br />To start, I'll do a little reorganizing and create a garden plan. This includes flagging plants NOW that need a new home in either my garden or a friend’s garden. Since I’ll do most of the moving in the fall, I have plenty of time to evaluate the new location to make sure it’s best.<br /><br />I will document all plants in my garden and create tags with plant name, size, bloom time and color. This new labeling approach should help me from planting orange poppies next to pink peonies again. And by having the plant details I can purchase more of the same plants I’ve grown to love.<br /><br />In the future, when purchasing new plants, I will carefully evaluate what I need and where it will live in the garden. If a plant will look fabulous as a grouping, I will sacrifice getting other random plants and purchase multiples of the same plant instead.<br /><br />I’m glad I finally realize what I’m doing wrong. The chaos of blooms, colors and random plant heights finally pushed me over the edge this summer. Now, it's your turn to hold me accountable. </p>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-72815413917295118022009-07-16T19:01:00.000-07:002009-08-01T11:05:12.550-07:00Chickens are Like Fluffy Little Pigs<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SnSDJI0UrVI/AAAAAAAAApQ/2_qUfHdZzMo/s1600-h/080109_Chickens+005.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 264px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365057249114107218" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SnSDJI0UrVI/AAAAAAAAApQ/2_qUfHdZzMo/s320/080109_Chickens+005.jpg" /></a>I tried kicking the chickens out of the coop today, since it was coop cleaning day, but they didn't make it any further than the doorway.<br /><br />Apparently the cool dirt was calling to them, so they dug a hole and rolled around in it like little pigs. What a beautiful thing to watch.<br /><br />It was so cute that I shoo'd them into the yard and removed some pavers from their coop floor. Now they have a little dirt patch in their coop and don't need to wait for their weekly yard visits.<br /><br />Notice how the hens and chicks are a family now and the chicks are getting bigger and fuzzier. Even the hens are looking healthier being away from roosters.<br /><br />The picture above is of the chickens rolling in the dirt. This year's tour included the Huntley House, Church, Parker, Sultan and Holt gardens.<br /><div></div><br /><div>I put together a quick bio of each garden that includes a slideshow of the pictures I took. The gardens are in order of how we visited them. </div><br /><div></div><div><span style="font-size:130%;"><strong>Huntley House Garden </strong></span></div><div>A large five-acre garden with an outdoor living area, ivy front steps, multiple berry patches, a fruit orchard, a wooded area and a cottage cutting garden.<br /><br /></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/38232508@N06/sets/72157621352579288/show/" target="_blank">Click here</a> for a slideshow of the Huntley House Garden.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><strong>Church Garden</strong></span></div><div>A Japanese style sustainable garden with a 20 second view of the water - according to the homeowner this is the length of time boats are in view before they disappear. A large bed of nasturtiums also added a bit of whimsy to this otherwise formal garden.</div><div><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/38232508@N06/sets/72157621225165807/show/" target="_blank">Click here</a> for a slideshow of the Church Garden.<br /><br /><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">Parker Garden</span><br /></strong>A very Pacific Northwest style landscape with many evergreen shrubs and trees planted around two creeks and a pond. To spruce it up this year, I painted the porch a nice black color and replanted the urns. One of these days I'm going to resurface the front porch with stone and replace the front walk with a more natural walkway. Until then, a new coat of paint does wonders.<br /><br /><strong>Left (front yard urns): </strong>Boxleaf Hebe, Aurea Heather, Black Mondo Grass & Scarlet Leader Cotoneaster<br /><br /><strong>Right (back yard urn):</strong> Orme Hebe, Spring Torch Heather & Scarlet Leader Cotoneaster<br /><br /><br />In just a couple hours I went from hating my front porch to accepting it - almost liking it. I bet when the urns fill out - I'll love this spot even more.<br /><br />What's funny is that last time I painted the porch I pretty much just painted it the color of concrete. Then because I picked a laytex paint it scratched off the show the green paint underneath - I hated it from day one (see 'before' picture on right).<br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SlF_vzHiXiI/AAAAAAAAAjc/XKCazY8Zkys/s1600-h/CIMG2184.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355201891072630306" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SlF_vzHiXiI/AAAAAAAAAjc/XKCazY8Zkys/s400/CIMG2184.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTaA_X-eVsb2cRZOM709Ln8t-YFbTAnt99vY00RB52mVOEkCwKxoC3Hlap_1IG5AWMQoNqTtGsfaIHF0js7JppnNrJZ32BPcvdD2artx1ED9BBLZIftcesn__T08nOBukFjJ1UX3mlNS4/s1600-h/CIMG2095.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355201888967794050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTaA_X-eVsb2cRZOM709Ln8t-YFbTAnt99vY00RB52mVOEkCwKxoC3Hlap_1IG5AWMQoNqTtGsfaIHF0js7JppnNrJZ32BPcvdD2artx1ED9BBLZIftcesn__T08nOBukFjJ1UX3mlNS4/s400/CIMG2095.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/38232508@N06/sets/72157620926391503/detail/"><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">Click here</span></strong></a> to see what my house looked like when I bought it in 2005.Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-46057082103636124502009-06-29T17:40:00.000-07:002009-07-02T21:30:16.769-07:00My Chickens Are Finally Acting Like Chickens<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/Sk2HlSy5pFI/AAAAAAAAAi8/gbwTNZwGaJM/s1600-h/CIMG2155.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 400px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354084606783628370" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/Sk2HlSy5pFI/AAAAAAAAAi8/gbwTNZwGaJM/s400/CIMG2155.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><p></p><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Meet Brownie, Hazel & Henny Penny. When done mowing we move it all back. This is very annoying.<br /><br />We need a permanent patio. I'd like to add large <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">pavers</span>/stone where the lawn currently is with a ground cover between the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">pavers</span>. Then add stone paths to the driveway and garage door - again with ground cover between.<br /><br />By using ground cover we won't have to mow but we'll still have a green look.<br /><br /><strong>This is where we need your help.</strong> The shape of the space is triangular and we can't agree on how to create a patio design that looks natural and provides the two walkways to the garage and driveway. We also disagree on the type of stone, rock, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">pavers</span> to use. I'd love to hear what you think about this project.Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-70610061876087448662009-06-17T21:31:00.000-07:002009-06-17T21:44:43.858-07:00Chicks Are Getting Fuzzy<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SjnDetpppJI/AAAAAAAAAg0/vAKBN8jTTZQ/s1600-h/CIMG2024.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348520964896957586" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SjnDetpppJI/AAAAAAAAAg0/vAKBN8jTTZQ/s400/CIMG2024.JPG" border="0" /></a> Brownie & Buttercup are starting to get big and pretty fuzzy. The last couple days they even started getting too big for their brooder. Sadly, we moved them into the closed hen house with a heat lamp and plenty of straw, food and water. <br /><br />I already have anxiety and want them back in the house. They seem fine and almost happy they're in a bigger spot. I just miss them and their little cheep cheep cheeps.<br /><br />Travis says it's like they're camping. Tucked towards the end of our route is the Elliot Bay Rose Garden.<br /><br />This waterfront garden gives us the opportunity to "stop and smell the roses" in the middle of a hectic work day.<br /><br />We stop long enough to stroll slowly down the garden's single brick path. There's the scent of roses, lavender and a little salt water; accompanied by the amazing views of Elliot Bay, Olympic Mountains and the city. What a treasure.<br /><br />The garden is small and takes only a couple minutes to walk through. At our exit, we reluctantly turn around and follow our same route back - to work.<br /><br />Here are some pictures of the roses, garden and views. I apologize the pictures aren't "scratch and sniff." Again, I took them with my phone.<br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SjPVykLG1YI/AAAAAAAAAfc/CVn0jZz_aYQ/s1600-h/061009_Veggies+014.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346852247299347842" style="FLOAT: left; Not only do <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Henny</span></span> Penny and Hazel hate us, but they're not doing what they're supposed to do and this has me worried. <div><div><br /></div><div>They don't eat out of their feeder, use the roosting pole, eat yummy veggie treats, lay eggs (except one) and they sure don't stink. We did have one VERY large poop today - good news! </div><div><br /></div><div>And here I thought the chicks were going to be the hard ones - we brought home two of those as well - they're in the house. </div><div><br /></div><div>Because I'm a "problem solver," I went in their coop today to see if I could make things a little better for them. I started by raking up their old shavings - this got them all in a tizzy. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Henny</span></span> Penny started squawking and flapping around. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Ok</span></span>. Head down - I left the coop. </div><div><br /></div><div>I hope they come out of their hiding spot soon to eat their food - I need to see more big poops before I'm happy. Next, we'll work on laying eggs. </div><div><br /></div><div>If you look closely at the picture, you can see them in far right (the dark spot) laying on top of each other (next to an urn of our outdoor cat's ashes). Poor things. I'm sure eventually they'll learn to <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">tolerate</span> us.</div><div><br /></div><div><strong>But The Chicks Love Us</strong></div><div><br /></div><div>Brownie and Buttercup are a true joy. If we do end up with a rooster we're going to try to keep him anyway - since we don't have rules against this in our town. It's only a problem if he gets too noisy & the neighbors complain. My neighbors love me. </div><div><br />One neighbor did have a rooster for a bit and only got rid of him because he was getting mean. We'll see. I'm not one to give up pets... </div><div><br /></div><div></div><div>These little guys have a couple more weeks in the house before we'll start introducing them to the chicken coop. We're still not sure if one of the hens in the coop is their mom. Maybe that's why they hate us?</div></div>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-73029973792318421702009-06-06T21:01:00.000-07:002009-06-07T10:12:20.612-07:00Tour of Seattle's Japanese Garden<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/Sis93gEQXiI/AAAAAAAAAcI/Svexp135FQo/s1600-h/Japanese+Garden+036.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344433406515109410" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/Sis93gEQXiI/AAAAAAAAAcI/Svexp135FQo/s400/Japanese+Garden+036.jpg" border="0" /></a>I found myself driving through the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle today & passing by the Japanese Garden. Since it was a beautiful morning and the garden is less than 4 acres, I decided to take a quick tour. I haven't been to the garden for almost 10 yrs.<br /><br />It was the best $5 I've spent it a long time. I could've sat there and walked around all day just soaking up the calm and peaceful environment.<br /><br />As I was walking (relaxed) through the perfectly pruned trees, I decided to take this tour at least once a year to help replicate the peace and openness in my garden but on a slightly smaller scale.<br /><br />I'll also need to go back with Travis, so he can get inspiration for his bonsai trees.<br /><br />Below are some pictures I took of the garden - with my phone! Since I wasn't planning on taking a garden tour I didn't bring our camera.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SivsAQ8OYjI/AAAAAAAAAdw/8lMZapUzV_w/s1600-h/Japanese+Garden+058.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344624872096948786" style="FLOAT: left; I buy new ones every year and still seem to need more. Even today I was thinking I needed some Hostas for under the Magnolia - the hydrangeas just aren't enough. I love the big leaves, the colors, and the different shapes and sizes.<br /><br />I'm always on a mission to find a huge leaf hosta. I have a couple big ones - but not THE big one. Maybe next year.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0yM8o9Io9uxEY09RYgROwfDROKmMmH6my0OzxivfyYuH1HJGNnwRs0LH6PZCmIEO-wt0I9jdVACzRwwyQDrqqUh2L90pPGdzl9rU-Vh-7uecWFm5hQer-0Fl6X-2d68MI6E_jWeNAL1M/s1600-h/iPhone0302.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344420508687879170" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0yM8o9Io9uxEY09RYgROwfDROKmMmH6my0OzxivfyYuH1HJGNnwRs0LH6PZCmIEO-wt0I9jdVACzRwwyQDrqqUh2L90pPGdzl9rU-Vh-7uecWFm5hQer-0Fl6X-2d68MI6E_jWeNAL1M/s320/iPhone0302.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyI7nOyUI/AAAAAAAAAcA/aFpIs-J4vNQ/s1600-h/iPhone0310.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344420511827806530" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyI7nOyUI/AAAAAAAAAcA/aFpIs-J4vNQ/s320/iPhone0310.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyIKbwo7I/AAAAAAAAAbo/g0HrTNdQFBs/s1600-h/iPhone0314.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344420498626356146" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyIKbwo7I/AAAAAAAAAbo/g0HrTNdQFBs/s320/iPhone0314.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpkbFM_btiJKivyeOqWSW5wMGmaQ_RBdm4Zt55vt5o0V7unS3clLhGJxsCxDZ2MuPz7m0D4Bvxakz4nF54NFAjI37jD083XMhP0vTYQcCSOoSUkTrC2iJcPgodUTKWCgdrnUha5Uc5AU/s1600-h/iPhone0301.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344420501603523602" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpkbFM_btiJKivyeOqWSW5wMGmaQ_RBdm4Zt55vt5o0V7unS3clLhGJxsCxDZ2MuPz7m0D4Bvxakz4nF54NFAjI37jD083XMhP0vTYQcCSOoSUkTrC2iJcPgodUTKWCgdrnUha5Uc5AU/s320/iPhone0301.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiswzbNX7EI/AAAAAAAAAbY/8H5Tv5aaVSA/s1600-h/iPhone0313.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344419042840538178" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiswzbNX7EI/AAAAAAAAAbY/8H5Tv5aaVSA/s320/iPhone0313.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyH8Ku21I/AAAAAAAAAbg/4DSAKlLjRZY/s1600-h/iPhone0308.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344420494796839762" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SisyH8Ku21I/AAAAAAAAAbg/4DSAKlLjRZY/s320/iPhone0308.JPG" border="0" /></a>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-68077880557084898772009-06-02T21:43:00.000-07:002009-08-26T18:13:30.347-07:00Weekend at Mom's FarmMy mom and step-dad have a farm out in the middle of nowhere (Omak, WA). A typical weekend visit includes milking goats, watching chickens run around, petting horses, giving milk to baby goats and eating a lot of great food. And that's exactly what we did this past weekend.<br /><br />As a child I lived on a small farm with dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, horses, goats, a cow, a turkey, peacocks and geese (I still hate geese). It seems as though every day I had chores to do - replace shavings, clean horse stalls, stack wood, and etc. It's funny, as an adult, I long to live on a small farm again. Just something I can be proud of while providing for my family.<br /><br />Here are some pictures from our weekend at my mom's.<br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwwL4Q0I/AAAAAAAAAag/9zWd6zflASs/s1600-h/053009_+029.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958845490119490" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwwL4Q0I/AAAAAAAAAag/9zWd6zflASs/s320/053009_+029.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAxYmdWfI/AAAAAAAAAaw/oQEtvzwaLlk/s1600-h/053009_+028.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958856339020274" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAxYmdWfI/AAAAAAAAAaw/oQEtvzwaLlk/s320/053009_+028.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYABXtH_eI/AAAAAAAAAZo/o9nckfZ2ITU/s1600-h/053009_+001.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958031464824290" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYABXtH_eI/AAAAAAAAAZo/o9nckfZ2ITU/s320/053009_+001.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwuVVhrI/AAAAAAAAAaY/vUfjIgxeYWk/s1600-h/053009_+012.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958844992915122" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwuVVhrI/AAAAAAAAAaY/vUfjIgxeYWk/s320/053009_+012.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAxIuRQHI/AAAAAAAAAao/8gM03ZQvr0I/s1600-h/053009_+008.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958852076814450" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAxIuRQHI/AAAAAAAAAao/8gM03ZQvr0I/s320/053009_+008.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYACKkhdbI/AAAAAAAAAaI/5DNAbBLPsfc/s1600-h/053009_+026.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958045118952882" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYACKkhdbI/AAAAAAAAAaI/5DNAbBLPsfc/s320/053009_+026.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYABuAkxOI/AAAAAAAAAZw/CMnGrezpo_k/s1600-h/053009_+010.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958037451982050" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYABuAkxOI/AAAAAAAAAZw/CMnGrezpo_k/s320/053009_+010.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4ktRt-7fMxj5uIshkJ3lvYg-AWph2E_jqx3mDnIjA3mikqL1X5QIYml30MMzf1Fc2MA4IeMIJwgIKQ5UJ75blRZ2J2GFePjm93Qwqc7ercqSZHSY4YayE3e_RAcyiPXgTW8gTxneK96Y/s1600-h/053009_+005.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958037719297394" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4ktRt-7fMxj5uIshkJ3lvYg-AWph2E_jqx3mDnIjA3mikqL1X5QIYml30MMzf1Fc2MA4IeMIJwgIKQ5UJ75blRZ2J2GFePjm93Qwqc7ercqSZHSY4YayE3e_RAcyiPXgTW8gTxneK96Y/s320/053009_+005.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAB1P4yqI/AAAAAAAAAaA/cjxJkq5IBiQ/s1600-h/053009_+020.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958039395256994" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAB1P4yqI/AAAAAAAAAaA/cjxJkq5IBiQ/s320/053009_+020.jpg" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwQnPmcI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/NzrkFXsMaRY/s1600-h/053009_+011.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342958837014960578" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiYAwQnPmcI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/NzrkFXsMaRY/s320/053009_+011.jpg" border="0" /></a>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802216931708402044.post-46443796657606649452009-06-01T21:05:00.000-07:002009-08-26T18:15:31.574-07:00Pets With Benefits<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiSlxsdK46I/AAAAAAAAAZQ/YKHWUZBXoEQ/s1600-h/iPhone0290.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 300px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342577331133932450" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiSlxsdK46I/AAAAAAAAAZQ/YKHWUZBXoEQ/s400/iPhone0290.JPG" /></a><br />We finally finished the coop last night. Of course we still have a few finishing touches to add but it's good enough for now.<br /><br />The hens are living in their new home and are still a bit scared. This is expected since they came from a farm with farm noises and now live in town with loud town noises. We're a couple blocks from the train, a hwy, the post office and main street - it can get pretty loud.<br /><br />Every hour they seem to get a little more comfortable with their new home and venture a little further out. They're slowly getting used to us and no longer squack and attack us when we enter their coop.<br /><br />It appears we have a quiet passive hen and a fiesty loud one. It's great to see their personalities already.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiSmetOU36I/AAAAAAAAAZg/vXMJCF1ePX4/s1600-h/iPhone0320.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342578104434220962" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Di-zhU9XVQ/SiSmetOU36I/AAAAAAAAAZg/vXMJCF1ePX4/s320/iPhone0320.JPG" /></a>We named the hens Henny Penny and Hazel. Penny is the copper colored hen while Hazel is the brown one. They're both Silkies and were born about this time last year.<br /><br />They're not used to climbing up ramps, having a hen house, or sleeping on roosting poles. So, I need to make a couple modifications to the ramp & hen house to make it a little cozier for laying eggs.<br /><br />I'm sure we'll get it right one of these days. Until then, we'll just take it one day at a time.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr8bE9_Opo_W_hAk7-6V17fiekuFd7Xov_3-Xyx31ttpju0-aRKT1fZBK8C-ZOVwyjpEIPV7Aa7nWX2t-PXWhg-B2P6sOkjhJsWW_4KNxz6HIgeQ_QwfccFL_rwJk8HVzDwmW6tZe78AQ/s1600-h/iPhone0280.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342578097767548706" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr8bE9_Opo_W_hAk7-6V17fiekuFd7Xov_3-Xyx31ttpju0-aRKT1fZBK8C-ZOVwyjpEIPV7Aa7nWX2t-PXWhg-B2P6sOkjhJsWW_4KNxz6HIgeQ_QwfccFL_rwJk8HVzDwmW6tZe78AQ/s320/iPhone0280.JPG" /></a><br />We also have two Silkie chicks in the house; we weren't sure if either of the hens we brought home are the mother and didn't want them to freeze to death outside. Even though it's pretty warm during the day it can get pretty cold at night. We also like having them in the house since they're cute.<br /><br />I put together this brooding box to make sure they are warm and safe. The wire top is to keep Pepper (cat) away from the chicks, even though he could care less.<br /><br />I'm sure this isn't the last time you'll hear about these guys. I love having pets and I was able to justify (and get approval for) chickens since they also provide eggs. They're a pet with benefits.</div>Angelahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13596276645644908057noreply@blogger.com0
